New Template Available for Progress Notes

Effective June 1, Nursing Case Management (NCM) will implement a new template for progress notes in Epic. A workgroup was formed to ensure Children’s follows best practices at the bedside, and determined a change was needed to ensure communication consistency between and among hospital units. The template will also improve handoffs and help clarify discharge information to insurance companies.

The new progress note template will be used for all inpatients who are at Children’s for more than 72 hours, and will be updated at a minimum of weekly, or with any major change in patient condition or if the patient moves to a new area. An estimated discharge date will be included as a date to work toward if the patient remains stable and the family is ready. This date will be updated as necessary.

The new progress note will remain under the “Ancillary” type note in Epic, with Case Manager as the author. The template will be reviewed in August to make any needed adjustments.
